SRI DARBAR SAHIB PAYS 2 CRORE ON LANGAR

SGPC has claimed that the GST has caused heavy burden on the Golden Temple as it had to pay Rs 2 crore as GST, while purchasing ration for langar ever since the new tax regime came into force.

GST has affected Golden Temple’s free kitchen langar service as the commodities such as raw food comes under higher tax slab resulting in 10 crores of additional expenditure on yearly expenses.

It is known as the world’s largest community kitchen — feeding freshly cooked food to an estimated 50,000 devotees on weekdays and over 100,000 on weekends and festivals. But the newly-introduced GST is going to put an extra burden of over Rs 10 crore on this socio-religious activity at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar and other gurdwaras, temple officials say.

With the purchases made for the world’s largest community kitchen at the Golden Temple coming under various slabs of the new GST since its inception in July 2017, the SGPC had to bear an extra burden of Rs 2 crore till date. Fumed over the Union Government’s insensitive attitude towards “langar sewa” (community kitchen), a socio-religious activity of the Sikhs from the time of the first Sikh Guru, Nanak Dev, SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal has slammed Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for giving misleading statements about sparing the community food from the ambit of the GST.
